Icon sizes: 512x512, 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 16x16 File formats: ICO, GIF, PNG, BMP ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why Do You Need to Use PNG Images in Your Website Creation? The pros of incorporating PNG images in web designing over various other image formats such as GIF and JPEG; the file format helps to make good and wonderful icons that will wow your visitorsThe PNG image format was introduced some time ago; it was brought out in the market around 95/96 to make up for the shortcomings of the traditional GIF file format. However, it did not catch on because the the browsers of the time were not designed to support the state of the art attributes of PNG so web designers and creators were compelled to include it in their designs restrictedly. One of the main hindrances standing in the way was Microsoft's flagship product, Internet Explorer which was one of the most popular browsers of the time; IE had very little space for PNG support consequently the format could only be incorporated to a bare minimum. Then, things metamorphosed with the introduction of IE7; this latest offering from Microsoft has proved immensely useful in increasing increasing the popularity of PNGs. So here is why at three reasons why PNG is is often regarded as the most useful image formats around today: You will be able to create transparent images or alpha transparency: When you analyze the features of GIF and PNG, it will become apparent that a very distinct advantage with PNG is that you can only save a specific color as transparent in GIF this equates to the fact that you can get the color regardless of it being opaque or transparent with nothing in betweenbut when you use PNG, you get a specific feature over GIF; because the format supports semi transparent pixels. This simply means that you can save a PNG file with a soft drop shadow and then fuse it with a background that suits your taste. Through this feature you will be able to use an image as a watermark or a gradient background. The file type allows for the gradual fading of hues from entirely opaque to absolutely transparent, so that you can see the webpage underneath They look spectacular: It is a well known fact that PNG images give you extreme flexibility also; there are numerous other advantages to including this format. For instance, if you choose a JPG image, you lose some of the information from the original file each time the file is saved, so after a while, you will be able to view a distinct downgrade in the appearance of the images. Although, this issue has now been sorted in the image format and you can save the pictures without losing any information, GIF only allows for a limited 256 color palette, which renders it quite useless if you are going to save a photograph. But, if PNG is incorporated, you can get the best features of both these formats; you will have access to a full color display like with JPEG format and it also offers managed color palette like GIF files. Another advantage is that the compression of the image is sans loss so the photograph stays as it is despite innumerable times of saving the file. PNG is self optimizing: A major concern that web designers have to tackle frequently is the fact that the contrast and the brightness of the monitor has to be changed to see the pictures appropriately; this problem occurs due to the Gamma settings of different monitors. Gamma is a method incorporated to distribute the luminance across the display surface. However, different operating systems use a variety of Gamma settings. Hence, an image that is color corrected for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Here again, in this scenario the flexible PNG picture format comes to the rescue, in PNG, you can save the images with a built in Gamma correction so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be automatically adjusted to display a picture with the impressive ratios of contrast as well as brightness. ![]()
