Why Should You Use PNG File Format in Your Web Design?
The advantages of incorporating PNG image format in web designing over other file types ;for instance, GIF and JPEG; the image format can be used to make really amazing and spectacular images that will entice your customersThe PNG file type was introduced a few years back; it was brought out in the market around 95/96 to make up for the shortcomings of the the common GIF file format. However, it failed to create ripples because the the browsers of the time were not designed to support the state of the art offerings of PNG so web designers and makers had to include it in their designs sparingly. One of the major hindrances that marred the features of PNG was with Microsoft's flagship product, Internet Explorer which was one of the most popular browsers of that period; IE had limited provision for PNG support which equated to the fact that the format could only be incorporated to a bare minimum. Then, the scene metamorphosed after the availability of IE7; this latest offering from Microsoft has proved immensely useful in increasing increasing the usability of PNGs. So here is why at three reasons why PNG is one of the most innovative image formats in the market today:
It is possible to create transparent images or a property known as alpha transparency: When you compare PNG with GIF, it will become apparent that one of the major differences is that you will only be able to save a specific color transparently through the use of GIF which means that you can get the color regardless of it being opaque or transparent with just transparency in between with the use of PNG, you get a serious feature over GIF; because the format can be used to produce semi transparency. This feature gives you the ability to save a PNG image with a soft drop shadow and then float it against any background. Through this feature you will be able to use an image as a watermark or a gradient background. The file type lets you incorporate the smooth fading of colors from fully opaque to see through, and hence you will be able to view the webpage underneath
They look fabulous: Apart from the fact, that you get amazing flexibility wit PNG images; there are numerous other benefits to using this format. For example, when you use a JPEG image, you lose some of the details on the original file every time the file is saved, so in time, you will be able to see a noticeable decline in the finesse of the media. Even though, this concern has now been sorted in in the file type and you can save the images without losing any details, GIF has a highly restrictive 256 color palette, which imparts it quite ineffective if you want to store a picture. However, when you use PNG, you could get the most desired features of both these formats; you will have access to a full color display similar to JPEG images and it also provides managed color palette as seen in GIF files. Another advantage is that the storage of the file is sans loss so the picture stays put regardless of how many time you save it.
PNG allows for self optimization: One of the hurdles that web designers have to tackle very often is the fact that the contrast and brightness of the commuter screen has to be regulated to see the pictures properly; this happens due to the difference in the Gamma setting used for the different monitors. Gamma setting is a technology incorporated to distribute the brightness across the display surface. However, various operating systems use distinct Gamma settings. Therefore, an image that is color corrected for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Here again, in this situation the innovative PNG picture format can prove useful, in PNG, you can store the files with a built in Gamma correction so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be automatically adjusted to show a file with the perfect ratios of contrast as well as brightness.
