Their report has rather pleased the American government: there was a lawful basis to declare "Diskaveri" not cast-away, and "temporarily preserved ship of the USA". Now it was required to be reactivated.
The reason of decrease in "Diskaveri" any more did not make secret, but what to sense? Every time, passing between Jupiter and Io, "Diskaveri" crossed the ionised channel connecting two heavenly bodies - the electric river between the worlds. Vortical currents arising in the case braked the ship on each coil.
Precisely it was not possible to predict the falling moment - the current in the channel varied largely, being subject to unknown laws of Jupiter. From time to time activity of a planet-giant sharply increased, then over Io electric and magnetic storms stormed; they were accompanied by polar lights. And the ships lost height, and in them intolerable heat for some time set in.
First it surprised and even a scarecrow, then all was explained. Any braking conducts to heating; powerful currents transformed the ship into the original electric furnace. "it" threw that in heat in a cold throughout several years - it is no wonder that products onboard have not shown sufficient firmness.
To a suppurating surface of Io similar to an illustration from the medical textbook, remains only five hundred kilometres when "Leonov" has departed on respectful distance from "Diskaveri" and Kurnou was decided to include the mid-flight engine. After several hours of shunting the ships were discharged of Io on one thousand kilometres; it was possible to take rest and be prepared for a following stage.
